Tartīl
A steady pace
You'll learn to read at a steady speed and break the habit of going back over words you’ve already read correctly, or hesitating frequently in the middle of the verses.
Tajweed
Tajweed as you read
- Pronouncing each letter clearly and from the right place
- Holding each madd for the right length
- Ghunnah, qalqalah and the rules of noon and meem
- Advanced and unique rules of tajweed
Waqf
Stopping and breathing
You’ll learn what the stopping signs in the mushaf mean and where you’re allowed to pause. We also work on when to breathe, so you’re not running out of breath halfway through an āyah.
Your teacher notes down every mistake and which rule it was. Each rule is marked as taught, needs reminders, or independent, and your progress reports show how your frequency of mistakes has changed over time.
When your fluency reaches a level you’re happy with, you can finish there, or opt in to the Hifth course if you’d like to start memorising. You’ll now find it much easier after building solid foundations in reading words you’re unfamiliar with.
Before you start
Is fluency the same as Tajweed?
No. Tajweed is the rules of recitation; fluency is your pace and proficiency. You need both, and they are taught together here rather than one after the other.
I get nervous reading aloud. Does that matter?
It is the reason the course exists. Lessons are one-to-one, the camera stays off unless you want it on, and the only person listening is the teacher whose job is to correct you.
I can read, but slowly and with a lot of stopping. Is this course for me?
Yes. It’s for readers who stop, restart and second-guess words, and it builds your pace without losing accuracy.
How long does the Fluency course take?
There’s no fixed length. You keep going until your reading reaches a level you’re happy with.
How long is each lesson?
Lessons typically last between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on your schedule.
How will I know I’m improving?
Your teacher notes down every mistake and which rule it was, and your progress reports show how your frequency of mistakes has changed over time.
Is there homework?
Yes. You’ll have homework to practise between lessons, which you hand in through your student portal, and your teacher sends back corrections.
Can I learn fluency in a group?
Yes, groups are available and kept to no more than 5. However, one-to-one is the better choice for fluency as you’ll be corrected by a teacher focused only on your recitation for the whole lesson.
Do I get a certificate at the end?
Yes. When you finish the Fluency course, you will receive a certificate.
What comes after the Fluency course?
Once you’re happy with your reading, you can finish there, or go on to the Hifth course to start memorising.
