The rules of Tajweed, module by module.
Module one
The letters
Light and heavy letters, qalqalah, and tanween with basic ghunnah. You will also learn the characteristics of the letters (sifaat).
Module two
The types of madd
- Madd Tabee’i, Madd Ewadh and Madd Badal
- Madd Laazim, Madd Munfasil and Madd Muttasil
- Madd Leen and Madd ‘Aridh li-sukoon
Module three
Noon, meem and the unique rules
- Ithaar, Ikhfaa, Idghaam and Iqlaab
- The rules of meem saakin
- Unique and advanced rules according to the riwaayah of Hafs ‘an ‘Asim, such as the Imaalah in Surah Hud
The course runs for six weeks. When you finish, you will receive a certificate.
You learn each group of letters through the abbreviations in al-Jazariyyah, the classical poem on Tajweed, so the rules are easier to remember and revise.
Before you start
Do I need to finish Qaa’idah first?
Only if you cannot yet read at all. If you can read but struggle with Tajweed, this is the exact course you need.
Can I learn Tajweed in a group?
Yes. Groups suit people who like learning alongside others; one-to-one suits anyone who wants every mistake caught as it happens. You can start in one and move to the other.
I’ve been reading for years. Will I still learn something new?
Yes. Students who have been reading for years often find mistakes they never knew they had. The course also teaches you to hear your own errors, so you can correct your recitation independently.
How long does the Tajweed course take?
Six weeks. Lessons typically last between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on your schedule.
Is there homework?
Yes. You’ll have homework to practise between lessons, which you hand in through your student portal, and your teacher sends back corrections.
Do I get a certificate at the end?
Yes. When you finish the Tajweed course, you will receive a certificate.
Do you use al-Jazariyyah?
Yes. Each group of letters is taught through the abbreviations in al-Jazariyyah, the classical poem on Tajweed, so the rules are easier to remember and revise.
What comes after the Tajweed course?
You can go on to Fluency to build your pace, or to Hifth to memorise the Qur’an with the rules you’ve learned.
